Exciting autumn season launches at Morley Gallery

An exciting season of exhibitions starts at Morley Gallery this week with the annual Fine Art Mentoring course exhibition titled The people that woke up happier– showcasing the best of student independent study led by Course Director and artist Erika Winstone. 

Julia Glyn Pickett: The monstrous roar of engines was in the air painting

Featuring work by eleven artists, the exhibition considers what it means to wake up happier 鈥 including in uncertain and weighty times. The works include diverse themes and employ a variety of media including video, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing and printmaking.

Exhibition curator Erika Winstone comments: 鈥淭he work in this show demonstrates the rich achievements of each artist, as well as the benefits of alternative models of learning and access to a peer group with a wide range of histories and experience. I congratulate each artist on this diverse and exciting exhibition鈥.

The Morley Fine Art Mentoring Course aims to support artists to expand their practice, gaining confidence through forging connections and a sense of community. An important part of the year involves working together to organise a group exhibition. So if you are interested in joining the course this autumn, why not visit the exhibition this week and see for yourself!

The exhibition runs until 6th September聽and is not to be missed! A free artists talk is on Saturday 6th 2.30 – 3.30 pm

Fractaline

Odalisk by Celia Moira

This show is followed by a sculpture and painting show titled Fractaline – curated by the 2024-25 Zsuzsi Roboz scholars at Morley. Celia Moira, is a figurative painter, and Emily Woolley, a material-led sculptor, present works developed during their residency at Morley College. The celebrated Zsuzsi Roboz scholarship programme is now in its eighth year at Morley. Emily Woolley and Celia Mora exhibit fine work produced during their year-long Morley residency. The show runs from 12th – 27 September

T茅mixw tl鈥檃 T鈥櫭鈥檃yak鈥: The Land is Angry

In October Morley gallery presents a special exhibition on 鈥渟ustainable urbanism and I indigenous intervention鈥 by Sierra Tasi Baker.  Sierra is a descendent of the Squamish and Kwakwaka鈥檞akw

Indigenous First Nations of British Columbia, and is a prominent Vancouver artist, activist and performer. This multi-disciplinary show features fashion, digital works, sculpture and painting – and is a rare chance to engage with a culture and ideas at once so distant and yet so familiar to those of us steeped in city life.

Later in October,  we welcome some of our external partners and colleagues to Morley with back-to-back exhibitions from the London Potters, and the London Guild of Spinners, Weavers, and Dyers – bringing to the Gallery some of the finest work in London鈥檚 ceramics and textile communities, which are also available for sale.

Our Studio Is In Our Head

In December,  we host a memorial retrospective, Our Studio is In our Head, for Martin Sim, sculptor, which features intriguing colossal works in neon. The work in the exhibition, dating from the 1980鈥檚 to the 2010鈥檚, embraces sculpture and installation, video, sound, neon, sculptural maquettes and drawing, with additional photographic documentation of projects realised in Australia and around the world.

Five Gold Rings

Presenting the annual Christmas show of Morley jewellery students, on display in the Foyer Gallery at Morley College, Waterloo Centre. Five Gold Rings celebrates the exceptional work being made by the jewellery students at the Morley Waterloo Centre. This annual Christmas Show puts the sparkle into our step and the Morley Foyer cases. What a perfect time to find that special Christmas present!

Elsewhere,  we have exhibitions to enjoy at the Chelsea Centre and the North Kensington Centre, including our regular collaboration with community arts collective Brown Baby.
