Morley students create stunning mural for primary school

Students on Morley’s UAL Foundation Course at the Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries have created a stunning new mural – at the Lordship Lane Primary School in Wood Green, North London.

The new mural depicts a colourful jungle scene inspired by the work of Henri Rousseau.  The striking design decorates the exterior of a PortaCabin style outbuilding used for teaching children with special educational needs, next to the school’s playground and reading garden.

The innovative project was led by Asimina Giagoudaki, Senior Lecturer in Photography at Morley,  who is also chair of the Parent Governors Committee at Lordship Lane Primary School in Wood Green.

Asimina worked closely on the project with her Morley colleague, UAL Foundation course leader Lara Ritosa-Roberts,  who offered the opportunity to Foundation art students to design and manage the creation of the new mural.  The mural was completed to coincide with the school’s 120th year anniversary celebration in July.

Asimina said “I think it is very important for children to see art and design surrounds our everyday life.  So I got in touch with the school’s leadership team and connected with Morley.  We wanted to create art for the pupils to observe, and to beautify the space. Now what was once a dull container without any reference to childhood, learning or playfulness is a lovely mural that connects to the school’s reading garden next to the container.”

The mural was coordinated by Morley degree student Adrianna Wojcik,  who has just completed a three year degree in Fine Art. Adrianna led a carefully planned project, managing a small team of volunteer Art and Design Foundation students, who together painted the mural over in three days.

Adrianna said:  ” I love painting murals, and painting has always been part of my life since I was young. And I love inspiring other people to paint.  I think there is something special about design and expressing yourself by painting onto a piece of paper…  I really want to inspire the children that art is very important.” “For this design,  the flowers, river and tiger merge together with the surrounding trees next to building – merging reality with fiction.”

The jungle mural projects builds on the success of a previous Morley mural project last year which Asimina again co-ordinated with UAL Foundation course leader Lara Rita-Roberts,  which Adrianna also worked on.  The previous earlier mural was designed by children and illustrates the schools’ values – Success, Perseverance, Ambition, Resilience, Creativity and Independence.

As the latest mural took shape, schoolchildren came to observe the painting process up-close and ask questions – a great sign that the school’s new jungle scene is an inspiration to the next generation of artistic talent!
